𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺? Often, the answer begins by learning from others.

TIMCON Associates welcomed a multidisciplinary delegation from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to Nairobi for a week-long benchmarking programme on urban road safety management and metropolitan transport planning. The delegation, led by Eng. Jacob Byamukama, Deputy Director for Traffic and Transport Management, and @George Okello Opiyo of the Human Resource Department, brings together technical and administrative professionals committed to strengthening road safety management in Kampala.

The programme supports KCCA’s efforts to establish a dedicated Road Safety Unit through regional knowledge exchange and institutional learning.
The first day featured an introduction to TIMCON’s work in transportation planning, traffic modelling and road safety, followed by a demonstration of the iMAAP crash database by the TRL team. The session highlighted how robust crash data and analytical tools support evidence-based decision-making and more effective road safety interventions.

The delegation later visited the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA), where Director General Eng. Francis Gitau shared insights on metropolitan transport planning, multimodal mobility, institutional coordination and long-term transport strategies. One statement from the session captured the essence of modern transport planning: “The road is the servant of the service.”

Across both engagements, one message stood out: safer and more efficient transport systems are built not only through infrastructure, but through strong institutions, reliable data and collaboration.

As African cities continue to grow, knowledge exchange between institutions will remain key to building safer, smarter and more sustainable transport systems.
