Aimsun Transportation Modelling Training for KeNHA Staff

As transport networks grow more complex, traffic modelling is becoming essential for smarter, data-driven infrastructure planning and future-ready mobility systems.
From 20th April – 1st May 2026, TIMCON Associates, in collaboration with Aimsun, had the privilege of delivering an intensive Transport Modelling Training Program for staff from the Kenya National Highways Authority (𝐊𝐞𝐍𝐇𝐀), focused on advancing technical expertise in transport modelling, simulation, and corridor performance analysis.
The program was conducted at Lake Naivasha Resort and combined both theoretical and practical components of transport modelling and simulation. The training covered foundational and advanced concepts in transportation modelling, including:
▶️ Introduction to Transportation Modelling
▶️ Network editing and scenario management
▶️ Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA)
▶️ Microscopic traffic simulation
▶️ Traffic management modelling
▶️ O-D Matrix development and balancing
▶️ Model calibration using GEH statistics

The training further incorporated practical application sessions using a live subnetwork model of the A7 and A8 Corridors in Mombasa, one of East Africa’s most strategic transport corridors. Using real traffic count data and Origin-Destination matrices, participants undertook:
☑️ Corridor flow balancing and OD calibration
☑️ Simulation of signalized and police-controlled intersections and calibration of model network
☑️ Queue, delay, and corridor performance analysis
☑️ Testing operational scenarios using DTA simulations
☑️ Extraction and interpretation of outputs

The practical sessions demonstrated how transport modelling directly supports evidence-based decision-making for corridor operations, mobility improvement, and long-term infrastructure investment planning.

This program reflects the growing need for and importance of technical capacity building, institutional collaboration, and data-driven transport planning in shaping the future of mobility and road transport planning across Kenya & East Africa.
