KeNHA Road Safety Capacity Building Training
Road safety outcomes are largely determined long before a crash occurs, through policy, design decisions, operational planning, and institutional capacity. This principle underpins the โ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐๐ง๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐๐๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐๐๐ฌ ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐จ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐๐๐โ project currently being implemented by TIMCON Associates.
As part of this assignment, ๐๐๐๐๐๐ conducted a road safety capacity building training at the Kenya National Highways Authority ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ค๐จ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐ on 4th and 5th May. The training brought together staff from the Lower Eastern and Corridor A offices, with the aim of strengthening technical capacity and improving road safety decision-making among KeNHA staff.
The training focused on practical and policy-oriented approaches to improving safety outcomes, covering key areas such as:
โ๏ธ The status of road safety in Kenya and safety data analytics
โ๏ธ The Safe System Approach
โ๏ธ Road safety management, asset management, and financing
โ๏ธ Vulnerable road users and pedestrian design considerations
โ๏ธ Work zone safety
โ๏ธ Countermeasure development and cost-benefit analysis
โ๏ธ Road Safety Audits and iRAP methodologies
โ๏ธ Practical road safety audit applications
Overall, the training enhanced technical capacity while promoting collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a more systematic approach to addressing road safety challenges. These competencies are critical in supporting effective supervision and implementation of road safety interventions along KeNHA corridors.
We recognize that safer roads require stronger institutions, better data-driven decision making, and road designs that account for all road users, particularly vulnerable road users who face the highest risks. This project represents an important step toward embedding road safety principles into the full lifecycle of transport infrastructure planning and management across Kenyaโs highway network.
