Kenya Roads Board Completes Comprehensive Road Safety Audit Training

Week 1 of the 10–21 November 2025 Kenya Roads Board (KRB) Road Safety Audit training, undertaken at Lake Naivasha Resort, was successful.

It focused on building a strong foundation for KRB teams to plan, audit, and manage safer roads. Across the 1st five intensive days, we covered:

  • The status of road safety in Kenya and the region, and why audits matter
  • The Safe System approach and strengthening road safety culture
  • Protecting vulnerable road users and unpacking the concept of safe speeds –Work zone safety, forgiving roadside designs and practical traffic calming measures
  • Traffic control & safety installations
  • The economic case for road safety, and data collection & analysis
  • An introduction to conducting and reporting Road Safety Audits (RSAs) & Road Safety Inspections (RSIs)
    Typical countermeasures & CMFs

Week 2 took the team from theory to practice, sharpening the understanding of the tools needed to plan, commission, and implement effective RSAs.

The week focused on translating concepts into real-world applications and strengthening institutional systems around audits. Across the week, we covered:

  • Cost–Benefit Analysis (CBA) – costing crashes, valuing safety benefits, and applying CBA to priorities mitigation measures
  • New Kenya RSA Guidelines – unpacking the updated national guidance and what it means for day-to-day practice
  • Drafting robust Terms of Reference (TORs) for RSAs to ensure quality, accountability, and clear scopes of work.
  • Field-based Practical RSA (On-Site) – conducting a live road safety audit and developing findings and countermeasures on a real corridor

Grateful to the KRB team for the rich engagements with the content and commitment to applying these lessons on Kenyan roads.

TIMCON is excited to see these skills applied to upcoming projects.
