4-Day Road Safety Audit Management Training Program in Nairobi
31st March to 4th April 2025 – Nairobi, Kenya
We completed a comprehensive Road Safety Audit Management Training Program at Emara, Ole Sereni Hotel, in collaboration with International Road Federation (IRF Global) and GRSF – Global Road Safety Facility. The four-day intensive program brought together key stakeholders from Kenya’s road sector to advance road safety practices across the region.
The training kicked off with warm welcomes and insightful remarks from representatives of Kenya National Highways Authority, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Ministry of Roads and Transport, Kenya Roads Board, Engineers Board of Kenya, and consulting firms.
Our sessions explored:
– The status of road safety in Kenya and the region
– The Safe Systems Approach
– Road safety culture and impacts
– Safety for vulnerable road users
Day 2 of our Road Safety Audit training focused on the economic rationale for road safety, data, and safer designs.
Participants engaged in:
– Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of safety interventions
– Road safety data collection and analysis
– Safe speed and work zone design
– Forgiving roadsides and safer infrastructure
Advanced modules ran concurrently for experienced practitioners, featuring strategy discussions, roundtables, and collaborative group work.
The momentum continued on Day 3 with deeper technical sessions and continued advanced modules for RSA practitioners. Key highlights included:
– Advanced cost-benefit analysis techniques
– Countermeasures for common road safety risks
– Conducting and reporting Road Safety Audits (RSAs) and Road Safety Inspections (RSIs)
The final day emphasized practical application and real-world implementation. Sessions covered:
– A deep dive into the new Kenya RSA Guidelines
– Drafting effective Terms of Reference (ToRs)
– Financing RSA recommendations for implementation
Participants then conducted field audits, applying classroom concepts to identify safety issues and propose evidence-based improvements. Teams collaborated to problem-solve real challenges, experiencing firsthand the complexities and rewards of professional road safety audits.
The program concluded with reflections and closing remarks celebrating collective progress and reaffirming our shared commitment to safer roads across Kenya and the region.
This initiative supports the professionalization of Road Safety Audit processes in Kenya and builds local capacity for implementing international best practices. We extend our gratitude to all participants, facilitators, and institutional partners for their dedication to advancing road safety.
